Sauber Junior Team takes fourth F2 podium of 2019

The Sauber Junior Team raced to its fourth podium of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship season during the Sprint Race at Sochi Autodrom in Russia on Sunday.

Ferrari Driver Academy member Callum Ilott and SMP Racing programme driver Matevos Isaakyan both worked their way forwards from P9 and P18 on the grid respectively.

During a frantic opening lap on the 5.84km track, Callum gained places to put himself firmly in contention for victory, competing in the lead train throughout the shortened 15-lap race.

The British F2 rookie crossed the line in P3 to record his second podium finish of the campaign, and the fourth of the year for his driver development team.

More F2 points for Sauber Junior Team in Sochi

Sauber Junior Team by Charouz claimed FIA Formula 2 Championship points for the fourth consecutive event after a strong performance during the Feature Race at Sochi on Saturday.

Ferrari Driver Academy member Callum Ilott and SMP Racing programme driver Matevos Isaakyan fought hard throughout the 28-lap race, with Callum collecting another top 10 finish.

An outstanding lap during Friday’s qualifying session handed Callum P3 on the grid for the opening encounter at the F1-supporting event, and he maintained his position on a frenetic opening lap.

The Briton ran the option/prime tyre strategy and emerged comfortably in contention for points, though a small setback during the second half of the race left him battling a flat spot and...
