The Sauber Junior Team claimed its first FIA Formula 2 Championship podium today as Juan Manuel Correa finished P2 in the Sprint Race at the Baku City Circuit.

The American rookie’s impressive performance in Azerbaijan earned the Sauber Junior Team by Charouz squad, a driver development collaboration between Sauber Motorsport and Charouz Racing System, its first podium in Formula 1’s official feeder series.

Having finished P7 and earned the team its first F2 points during Saturday’s Feature Race, Juan Manuel started the Sprint Race from the front row of the grid and remained in the mix at the head of the pack throughout a frantic timed race at the tricky street track.

The Alfa Romeo Racing F1 Development Driver held P2 throughout much of the race and kept his composure to pick up his first piece of silverware during only his second event in the category.

Ferrari Driver Academy member Callum Ilott also had a strong Sprint Race in the wake of having to start P16 due to an electrical failure in Saturday’s Feature Race.

The Briton drove quickly and cleanly as he moved up the order to finish in P9 – a mere 0.005s outside the points-paying positions in an enthralling fight to the chequered flag.

Antonin Charouz, team owner, said: “We’re all delighted to get our first points on Saturday and then our first podium today. It’s important to remember this was only the fourth F2 race of the season for our rookie drivers. But I think we’re definitely getting into our stride now and can be confident for the races that are coming up.”

Bob Vavrik, Team Principal, said: “This podium is a good boost for the team and our motivation. Juan Manuel did a really good job. It was a tough race but he did well to manage the situation and come home in P2. Callum didn’t make the best start and then the field was chaotic and difficult to come through. He just missed out on P8 at the end which was a shame because he deserved something.”

Juan Manuel Correa said: “That was an amazing race! I had a bit of an issue early on with the brakes and didn’t feel comfortable for a while but then I got into a rhythm and had enough pace to keep the guys behind. It was a tricky race to judge as there was a lot of pressure racing guys with more experience, but I’m very happy with how it turned out. This is a great result for the whole team.”

Callum Ilott said: “It was close to the points! It was a crazy race. I didn’t get the best start and I was out of position. Then people ahead of me kept crashing and we had the Safety Car periods. There was the potential for a lot more. The speed was positive overall but it felt like one of those weekends that just wasn’t ideal. But we have to brush it off and go again next time.”
